I was fortunate enough to receive an early edition of Theresa's book. It was captivating. The book details a fishing ritual that is over a 1,000 years old. The history and culture that Theresa
reveals is fascinating. When you finish the book, you will want to be on the next plane to Palermo. She has received critical acclaim from numerous sources that you can read through her link to Amazon.com. - Pierce Haviland

Tego,
I was thinking about you last weekend; then I got your postcard. ESP at work! You didn't include an address where I can reach you. Can't wait to read the book. I will order it ASAP, but I want your autograph, so you'll have to come out here. You haven't aged a bit (from what I can tell from the photo in the water). Write again and let me know where I can get in touch with you.

Tego,
When we wrote letters back and forth while I was in college and you were in high school, I knew you were destined to write. The world comes alive no matter what you write about. I will make sure everyone I know here in North Carolina buys Mattanza. I have ordered mine today and you can sign it when you come to the Raleigh area. I am calling the 2 travel book stores and Fearrington in Chapel Hill to make arrangements. This will be my treat.

Ms Maggio; Your wonderful book echoes my time in Ireland learning to build currachs. Your description of time spent in the company of fishermen is right on. Your work, as it touches on many aspects of life on Favignana verges on Geography in the best sense: telling about how other people live their lives.
You obviously enjoy having as your job the pleasant chore of finding out as much about what feeds your passions. I sincerely hope the citizens of the island can overlook the inevitable places where "She got it wrong", and recognize the extraordinary affection and sympathy you have for them.
As folk/peasant societies disappear world wide, it is important that they be documented by sympathetic observers such as you. Good job!

I am looking forward to purchasing your book. This will be of special interest as we have a friend whose father was a tuna fisherman in Castellaamare de Golfo. My husband and I read all we can about Sicily. We have read all of the Mary Taylor Simeti books, and now reading "A House in Sicily'.
Also, books about, and by, Danilo Dolci. We have recently aquired "Milocca: A Sicilian Village". This is an anthropological study written in 1935, but not published until 1971. I am a watercolor artist with roots in Sicily and Brooklyn. All my grandparents migrated from Sicily to New York City at the turn of the century.
I have visited and painted in Sicily and will be returning there in Sept/Oct of 2000.
I have a web page of my heritage and paintings of Sicily that I think you might be interested in viewing.

Dear Theresa: I was delighted to receive your email this afternoon telling me of your new book. Since my Sicilian paternal grandfather was a seaman with the Italian merchan marine, it is no wonder that I was drawn to working in the Department of Oceanography for almost 15 years here at Texas A&M University. Grandpa used to remark that one can never get salt water out of the veins! Looking forward to reading your book. Rosemary DePasquale Boykin

Dear Theresa, Your book is wonderful and I have just e-mailed my friends and family with the information about the book and how to purchase it online. I am so proud of my accomplished family. Your book is another example of the talent and capacity for life that has been handed down to us from our gutsy ancestors. I am looking forward to your next book. You ought to write about Aunt Alphonsia as she was an incredible woman and a credit to all women that immigrated to America. Ask your dad and Freda to tell you all they know about her. Dear Theresa Maggio--
I am writing on behalf of my mother who has a home in Favignana and absolutely adores your book. I am your fan, too, indirectly, having selected a piece of yours for inclusion in the book Travelers Tales: Italy (where hopefully you have found yourself). The sad fact was that all the permission processing left me in less contact with the authors than I would have liked. Now my mother is begging me from Sicily to find out how she can write to you. I will forward the Cambridge Perseus Publishing address to her, but I have found publishing houses to be unreliable mail deliverers. I hesitate to write more in this public forum except to note to your other readers that, if a person who has lived on that small island for over fifteen years finds your book to be compellingly researched, and amazingly insightful into a very closed island people, this is genuine and direct praise. I add my mother's phone number and address in Favignana, as I do not have yours. Mom is a former sixth grade teacher and an avid reader. You may perhaps feel kindly, and consider reaching her. I only presume to suggest this as few are the people who know and love Favignana.

Cara Theresa,
Da allora, 1994/1995 sono tornato a Favignana, Il sole, il mare, l'isola, la gente, nulla è cambiato. Sempre un posto splendido, dove ci si può veramente riposare e ricordare.
Mancavi solamente Tu.
Come và li in USA ?
Sono rientrato a Marzo dalla Nuova Zelanda e a Luglio da Cuba. Entrambe splendide, anche se la
New Zealand mi è piaciuta di più.

Hi, I have a great interest in purchasing your book . I'm 1/2 sicilian and very ineterested in my heritage . I can remeber my Grandfather selling me stories of the "Matanza" . I saw a special program titled "The Italians" on the Discovery channel . It highlighted 2 of my great passions ... Ferrari's & tuna fishing { The Matanza !"} . Ever since seeing that program I've been trying to buy any books that cover this ancient fishing ritual . I've been trying to find a book called "Tonnara" and Ms. Maggio's book . If any one could tell where to purchase either of these books I would be forever grateful ! Please E-mail any info on where to purchase any books about the "Mattanza" to lorrix@earthlink.net.

Dear Lorrix,
I tried your e-mail address, but it doesn't work. You can purchase my book through my homepage, by clicking on either the Amazon or the Barnes and Noble logos and going directly to my book on their sites. Or you can patronize your local independent book store. Or you can buy it through the Quality Paperback Book Club (a division of Book of the Month Club). Or you can get it through your library.
Best of luck.

Dear Theresa,
I just watched the Ingrid Bergman-Rossellini’s movie Stromboli. There was a segment of a
mattanza in it so I thought of you. My husband and I returned to Sicily again after we met you at
your appearance at Ferrington Village in Chapel Hill. I did more family history and painted again.
We visited the Tonnara in Scopello. It is such a beautiful place and it meant so much more to us
after having read your book. It was truly my favorite place to paint.
Have you taken your winter trip back to Sicily yet? We also visited Polizzi Generosa and it was as
lovely as you described it in your NY Times article. We enjoyed the most wonderful lunch there.
I am in the process of painting from my photos taken there.
Please check out my new web site of Sicily.. I have about twenty new paintings
on it. http://www.geocities.com/gwinnettcf

Dear Theresa,
I’m on chapter 20 and I really should wait until I finish the book to write to you but I found your website and I wanted to tell you how much I’m enjoying it. I really admire your free-spiritedness and willingness to go into uncharted territory as a single woman alone in a mostly traditional society. I am also of Sicilian descent and from kicking around the web, it seems as though there are quite a few of us out there trying to make a connection with or pay homage to the land of our ancestors. I was wondering if you think this qualifies as a phenomenon and what you think of this. As a photographer/artist, I have been looking for an angle from which to insert myself. But I’m never really sure what my motives are. Do I want to take or give? The last thing I would ever want to do is exploit anyone or anything for my own needs or desires. My thinking is; Sicily may be the land of my ancestors but she owes me nothing. But I cannot deny that I want something from her and this want has plagued me most of my life. I am really impressed at how you managed to solve that problem (if ever it was a problem for you). I noticed in the book that you were very careful in respecting the livelihoods and dignity of the people for whose lives you were a part. I just have one criticism regarding this website; you must post a better picture of Clemente. If you wish to respond my e-mail address is manalula@hotmail.com

I have enjoyed reading your very moving account of a vanishing way of life. It has been an inspiration as well as temporarily comforting my frequent and sometimes painful longing to be in Sicily. Thank you for that.
I am a first generation Sicilian-American who cannot get Sicily out of his mind and who finds himself trying to figure out ways to live there permanently.
My mother was from Gesso and father was from Milazzo on the northeastern coast of Sicily. They, along with much of their immediate family, settled in New York. When I was a boy, my father always took me fishing with him, often miles out at sea, out of sight of land, far from the worries of his small engraving business. It was his passion. It was not until decades later as an adult, that I got to Sicily and finally began to understand my father, family heritage and myself. Sicily and the surrounding sea captured my imagination and gave me a new perspective on life.
As a chef, I have been dedicating much of my time researching Sicilian cooking. I have been back frequently to visit my cousins, collect recipes and soak up as much knowledge and culture to keep me sated until I was able to return. I hope one day to produce a cookbook focusing on the food of the Eolian Islands and the nearby shores of Sicily, but I am also curious to know something of the recipes from the Egadi. Though I have yet to visit them, the Egadi are at the top of my list of places to visit on my next trip to Sicily.
A giant Salgado photograph of Favignana’s tonnaroti on my office wall has a spiritual significance for me and burns into my soul.
Regards,
Kenneth Albert Calascione

Ciao Theresa this is Gianriccardo Cerro, and I wanted to ask you if there is an italian version of your book anywhere for my dad in that he still hasnt learned english(weve been here 20 years)and only speaks in "dialetto favignanese"..thanks.You mentioned something about Monterey, but we are up in marin county, north of SanFrancisco. The Incaviglia family are the only people originally from Marettimo that now live in Monterrey that we know around here.My dad is Nino Giacalone known in Favignana as "Marcazzo"after his dad Marco. My mom met him in 1977 when I was 4 years old after a car hit me in front of the quattro rose,Nino picked me up and drove me unconcious and full of blood to the piazza to get my mom and then to the hospital to get helped and they were a couple since then.He came to Rome with us 2 years later and they married. We lived in Favignana for a year in 1980 and then moved to Rome (where I was born) and returned to Favignana every summer for 3months a year, and then moved to California...dove mi sono americanizato.Beh,questa e' la mia breve storia per te,il libro comunque lo vorrei regalare a Nino e se mi sai dire se lo posso trovare in Italiano sarebbe stupendo, grazie!!!Un saluto.....Gianriccardo Cerro

I picked up your book at the airport, and was mesmerized by your beautiful tale of the bluefin tuna, Sicily, and its proud people.. My brother and I traveled to Sicily to visit the birthplaces of our patenral and maternal grandfathers, Santa Margherita Belice and Sambuca (my grandmother was born in Villa Franca). We stayed at the "La Banderia" owned by Calergero and Francesca Genco, VIa Umberto I, 33, 92018. It was a magical experience, and now I spend my time reading about Sicily and planning for another visit to include Favignana. I was especially pleased to read your references to Santa Margherita Belice...is there a story you could tell about this beautiful village, as well?
I regret that I missed your book signings in the Mid-West. In the meantime, thank you for sharing your experiences and your photos packaged in a beautiful book, "Mattanza"!

I've just finished your fascinating book.Your passion to the fishermen, their community and these monsters of the deep is well understood. Having fished the giant bluefin tuna off the Maine coast for the past 40 years your story is both poignant and captivating.
Even though our catch method differs totally,(single fish harpooned by hand) I am positive the same heartstopping excitement prevails.
Here too, the decline of the catch is prevelent... Until four or five years ago 1000 lb fish were caught 10-15 miles offshore..now most harpoon and rod/reel boats go 60-70 miles for 300-400lb bluefin.
Of interest also was your view of the Japanese market. It has been our understanding that their current need for our fish (and mega-price) was driven by the fact that they completely decimated the species in their own waters.
Thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable tale.

Dear Theresa,
My mother was born in Favignana, and then later lived in Marettimo. I had always wanted to see these Islands but never did. My mother thought about it but never went back to visit Sicily. She died in 1972.
A few days ago,I happened to see an article about Sicily while waiting in the doctor's office and suddenly thought about looking Favignana and Marettimo up on the internet.
It has been fascinating ever since! I didn' t know they were part of what is called Egadi Islands. I realize that the islands are very different from when my mother lived there! I plan to go to Barnes and Nobles tomorrow night and look for your book.
You have no idea what this means to me. It's a part of my life that I never really have forgotten, the time of my life when my mother was alive! Your parents are always a part of you no matter how many years they've been gone.
Looking at the photographs on the various web sites I can see how beautiful it is there, just like my mother said it was.
I was telling my sister about all this, and if I can get the money together,(no small feat), perhaps we could go there. Wait till I tell her about your book.
It's after midnight and I have to get up for work tomorrow. Goodnight.

the "stone boudior" allows vivid images to flow through words. centuries-old traditions beginning to bend as the counter-culture begins to capture the younger generations.
the characterizations of the people in these small towns become real to me as if i have met them, or recently passed them on the street.travel from the barracks in santa margharita to the soaring balcony in polizzi gererosa, the blue-blue sea of the therranian. i feel as if i have traveled the island.

The Stone Boudoir was excellent. I love your ability to become a part of the Sicilian community and relate traditions that are centuries old. As I looked at the new Stone Boudoir photos on this web site, I had the feeling I knew the people and places. That was because of the clear images that your words create. APH in NJ
